New Puppy Parent Nightmare: Day 15 with Qiqi, Mycoplasma Infection & Vet Bills

Today marks Day 15 since our puppy, Qiqi, came home. Unfortunately, we hit a major bump in the road. He started showing symptoms of a runny nose and coughing, and what began as a minor concern quickly escalated into a stressful veterinary visit.

The Symptoms Escalate Quickly

I first noticed a mild cough two days ago, especially when he pulled on his leash, but I didn’t think much of it at the time. Yesterday evening, we took him to a farm, and by nightfall, he had developed a yellow nasal discharge. Alarmed, I rushed him to the vet today, where the diagnosis was confirmed: Mycoplasma Infection.

Treatment and Costs

The vet immediately administered injections and nebulizer treatments. The consultation and initial treatment cost around $85, and we have been advised to continue this regimen for a full week to prevent the infection from developing into pneumonia. The financial and emotional toll on a new puppy parent is significant, but seeing Qiqi comfortable is worth every penny.

Crucial Advice for New Pet Parents

During our hospital visit, the vet shared some vital advice that I want to pass on to all new pet parents:

  • NO outdoor walks until fully vaccinated! Puppies have incredibly weak immune systems, and the outside world is full of unseen risks.
  • Beware of Canine Distemper! There is a severe outbreak currently, and it is highly contagious through the air. Vigilance is key.

As a first-time dog owner, this was a tough and expensive lesson learned. Please take precautions and keep your furry friends safe!

Cross-Border Pet Parent Tip

Always keep pet probiotics and immune-boosting supplements on hand! A strong gut and immune system are your puppy's best defense against environmental stress and infections. Furthermore, if you must travel with an unvaccinated pup, a breathable pet carrier is an absolute must to minimize direct air exposure and protect their delicate respiratory system.
