Day 19 with Qiqi: Home Care & One Thing Our Vet Drilled Into Us 💊🐶
Welcome back to Qiqi's journey! Day 19 since he came home, and officially Day 1 of our home-care recovery.
As I mentioned yesterday, the vet sent us home with a 3-day course of medication to finish his treatment. I'll be honest — I was nervous about pilling a puppy. But Qiqi has been such a good boy. We follow our vet's instructions to the letter, including the timing she gave us for each dose.
On that note — here's the one thing our vet really drilled into us, and I'd pass it on to every pet parent:
Read the label. Xylitol is in a LOT of sugar-free gum, candy and nut butters, and it's seriously dangerous for dogs. We check every single label in our house now. It takes two seconds and it's genuinely worth it.
And whatever you use to get a pill in — run it past your vet first. Some medications have to be given a certain way, and every dog is different. What works for Qiqi might not be right for yours.
Beyond that, here's what our vet told us to do at home:
🏠 Keep him warm: no fan or AC blowing directly on him, especially at night.
🥣 Easy on the stomach: simple, easy-to-digest food and plenty of fresh water at room temperature.
💤 Rest: no walks or playtime yet. Just cozy naps and gentle belly rubs.
His nose looks normal again, he's eating well, and his energy is slowly coming back. He still sleeps a lot — which, honestly, is exactly what a little body needs to recharge.
Final update tomorrow when we finish his last dose. Fingers crossed 🤞
